Dr. Osama Mohammed is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Director of the Energy Systems Research Laboratory at Florida International University. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He published numerous journal articles over the past 30 years in areas relating to power and energy systems as well as in the area of computational electromagnetics and the design optimization of electromagnetic devices. He has performed research work in artificial intelligence applications related to these areas. He authored and co-authored more than 400 technical papers in the archival literature in Journal and major conference record. He has conducted research work for government and research laboratories in shipboard power conversion systems and integrated motor drives. He also has recent interest in energy cyber physical systems and the application communication and sensor networks for the distributed control of smart power grids. He has been successful in obtaining a number of research contracts and grants from industries and Federal government agencies on projects related to these areas. Professor Mohammed also published several book chapters including; Chapter 8 on direct current machinery in the Standard Handbook for Electrical Engineers, 15th Edition, McGraw-Hill, 2007 and 2012 as well as a book Chapter entitled ” Optimal Design of Magnetostatic Devices: the genetic Algorithm Approach and System Optimization Strategies,” in the Book entitled: Electromagnetic Optimization by Genetic Algorithms, John Wiley & Sons, 1999.

Professor Mohammed is a Fellow of IEEE and is the recipient of the prestigious IEEE PES Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award in 2012. Dr. Mohammed is also an elected Fellow of the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES). Professor Mohammed received the excellence in research award from Florida International University in 2012. He is Editor of IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. He is also an Editor of COMPEL and was editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics-conferences, the Power Engineering Letters. Professor Mohammed is the past President of the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES). He received many awards for excellence in research, teaching and service to the profession and has delivered numerous invited lectures at scientific organizations around the world.

Professor Mohammed has been the general chair of several international conferences including; ACES 2006, IEEE-CEFC 2006, IEEE-IEMDC 2009, IEEE-ISAP 1996 and COMPUMAG-1993. He has also chaired technical programs for other major international conferences including; IEEE-CEFC 2010, IEEE-CEFC-2000 and the 2004 IEEE Nanoscale Devices and System Integration. Dr. Mohammed also organized and taught many short courses on power systems, Electromagnetics and intelligent systems in the U.S.A and abroad. Professor Mohammed has served ACES in various capacities for many years. He also serves IEEE in various Boards, committees and working groups at the national and international levels.

Synergetic Activities in Education, Research and Student  Development Efforts:

  • Dr. Osama A. Mohammed has been instrumental in involving a large number of undergraduate students in research and internship experiences in STEM areas over the past 15 years.  During this period he has participated in the Summer Faculty Research Program as a senior and Distinguished Research Fellow for more than 12 years bringing with him undergraduate student interns who are US citizens from minority groups. He has spent significant times at NSWCCD working with many colleagues and has gained a clear appreciation for significance of developing STEM talent and guiding the students to become leaders in supporting ONR and DoD missions.
  • Dr. Mohammed has created the ONR Scholar program within a number of his ONR funded projects over the past several years. This program resulted in the involvement of more than 75 undergraduate students annually in research and professional development experiences which led most of these student to joining the workforce and/or continuing their graduate studies. Many of these students were involved as interns at the Energy Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL) at FIU or at NSWCCD in Philadelphia and Carderock. His laboratory involved students have 100% track record being employed after graduation or joining graduate school. Other students have received excellent laboratory experiences and mentorships from faculty and graduate students at the laboratory. Several students have also participated in presenting and publishing their work results at ONR and NAVSEA project meetings as well as ASNE and IEEE conferences. His students constantly receive national and international awards for their publications. Professor Mohammed Research work receives high level of citations according Google scholar and ISI web of science.
  • The Energy Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL) was developed through funding from ONR over the past 10 years. This laboratory has significant hardware, software and instrument capabilities represented by the Smart Grid Test Bed. A demonstration video of the world class facility can be viewed of the laboratory website at https://energy.fiu.edu. This facility allow research and educational activities to verify educational and theoretical ideas. It is now being used in conjunction with several undergraduate and graduate courses. Students are utilizing these facilities to complete capstone senior design projects and graduate degree projects by building their testing setups from simulation to implementation stages. Product development environments and emulators as available in this laboratory are available for student and training use.
  • The Power System Smart Grid demonstration project is a hardware/software/communication platform built at the Energy Systems Research Laboratory for real time control with hardware in the loop. This Smart Grid is a self -managing and reliable smart grid facility that is developed and presented as the future of protection and control systems for self-healed operation. The system involves AC and DC infrastructures to enable the utilization of sustainable alternate energy sources. The test bed involves hardware representing generating stations, transmission lines, synchronizers, data acquisition system, Loads emulators in addition to the utilization of new wireless communication layers to enable smart power sharing among available resources. Pulse load hardware emulators are also being implemented on the DC side to examine the practical use of systems such as charging of Plug in Hybrid Vehicles. Synchronized phasor measurements are used for real time measurements to enable hardware in the loop simulation. This enables applications such as validation of system models, measurement of stability margins, maximizing stable system loading, islanding detection, and system-wide disturbance monitoring. The test-bed also features an energy cyber physical infrastructure implemented in hardware and software.
  • Professor Mohammed has also been part of several STEM projects funded by the US department of Education at FIU Center for Diversity in Engineering and Computing as a Co-PI. This include the GEAR UP programs (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). These programs focus on enhancing the academic, personal, and emotional development of students and their families. This program aims to develop and cultivate the self-expectation of success in each student. Professor Mohammed was PI on several DoE projects aiming at enhancing power and energy education and developing new course in power and energy.
  • Professor Mohammed has been instrumental in establishing and guiding the South Florida Regional Future City Competition of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition as regional coordinator for the past 13 years. This program provides a fun and exciting educational engineering program for sixth, seventh- and eighth-grade students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a “hands-on” application to present their vision of a city of the future. This will be accomplished by; 1) fostering engineering skills, such as teamwork, communication and problem solving skills; 2) providing interaction among students, teachers, and engineer mentors; 3) Informing the community about the multi-disciplines within the engineering profession; and 4) Inspiring students to explore futuristic concepts and careers in engineering. The National Engineers Week Future City Competition requires; problem-solving, team work, research and presentation skills, practical math and science applications, and computer skills.

Research and Scholarly Accomplishments

 

  • Professor Mohammed is an accomplished researcher and an educator. He has over 30 years of teaching, curriculum development, research and industrial consulting experience. He authored and co-authored more than 300 technical papers in the archival literature as well as in National and International Conference records in addition to additional numerous technical and project reports and monographs. In addition he is and author of several book chapters in his field of expertise. His publications has excellent citation records by others in these fields of expertise.
  • Professor Mohammed specializes in Electrical Energy Systems especially in areas related to alternate and renewable energy systems and  design optimization of electromagnetic devices, He is current interest in shipboard power systems and integrated motor drives. He is also interested in the application communication and sensor networks for the distributed control of power grids. Dr. Mohammed has been successful in obtaining a number of research contracts and grants from industries and Federal government agencies. He has a current active and funded research programs in several areas funded by the office of Naval Research. Professor Mohammed is also interested in developing learning environments and educational techniques for Internet based delivery systems and virtual laboratories.
  • Professor Mohammed is a Fellow of IEEE and is a Fellow of the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society. He is the recipient of the prestigious IEEE 2010 Power and Energy Society Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award, the FIU Excellence in Research Award as well as the recipient of the 2010 technical leadership award from the IEEE Magnetics Society and the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society. He is Editor of IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. He is also an Editor of COMPEL and was editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics-conferences, the Power Engineering Letters. Professor Mohammed is the past President of the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES).
